Athleisure: Fitness Is Fashion

Fitness is in, People! If you are a gym junky or not you are rocking yogas with combat boots or track pants and heels. Athleisure is a movement! Athleisure has been described as a "weird hybrid" and the new casual. In 2015, while retail might have down, athleisure was up 12%, according to Business Insider. Brands are adapting to this trend and created their own athleisure collections to get on board.

Athleisure is basically clothing created for an environment like the gym but, it also worn in everyday settings like the office and social occasions such as brunch. The trend, turned classic, began in 2014. Getting into the gym everyday and eating healthy became fashion overnight. Healthy and fitness has been trending now for years, working out everyday, clean eating and everyone is jumping on that bandwagon. Being able to be fit and healthy and look stylish and comfortable is the goal of this generation, and it fits the time. Celebrities are really embracing this trend as they have seen it walk down the runway for designers such as Marc Jacobs and Beyonce's Ivy Park. Finding ways to glam up jogger pants or casual down a dress with sneakers is a simple way to change from the gym to the next thing on your busy schedule. With technology being so advanced and our generation wanting more from it, it makes since that we want our clothes to be simple, comfortable.

According to Todd Snyder, founder of Eponymous Label and also former head of Menswear at J.Crew, athleisure isn't going anywhere for at least the next 10 years.  But Vogue questions if it's acceptable, as in the streets of Paris it is not. “I think wearing your athleticwear all day is more than acceptable,” says SoulCycle cofounder Julie Rice. Athleisure is not just a trend but a way of life, if you will, at least for Americans. Finding ways to go from the gym to the streets and office have never been easier but, Vogue put together the "Rules" for wearing workout wear:

  1. Keep up with the seasonal trends.
  2. Invest in pieces that mix function with fashion
  3. Accessorize appropriately.
  4. When in doubt, stick to neutrals.
  5. Dress for the occasion.

Women are not the only ones who are turning to athleisure, men are too. From track pants to tennis shoes, men are mixing it up at the office and on the streets.

I love the athleisure movement. It's not just about fashion and style but living a healthy lifestyle and it promotes fitness and clean eating. We are paying more attention to what goes in our mouths and how it effects our future as far as living longer lives. Whether you are in the gym or not that day, athlesiure is perfect for the now. Millennial take over, take two!

Tomorrow on the blog, ProFASHIONalism is back! I will be showing you what athlesiure looks are appropriate for the office and what looks are going too far.
